Where the Boys Are…

As the world of Crypto seems to grow (did you see all those Crypto Super Bowl commercials? some dripping with masculinity) and we see more people talking about NFTs and then reading about home selling in Tampa Bay AS NFTs, here at Hashtag Creative, we decided we needed to learn more.

As we asked around we found a pattern. Every woman we asked said, “oh my husband, my boyfriend, my brother is involved in that, but I sure would like to know more.” We could find very few women who could help us. We also heard things like “I’m too old to learn” or “I’m too dumb to get it.”

Here we go again. Men are building their wealth at an alarming rate without women. And it’s not the first time.

A little Herstory.

Few women were welcome in the world of money and finance in the early United States. Women were excluded from these worlds—passively and actively.

Abigail Adams, for instance, was a savvy investor who many argue was responsible for all of her husband’s wealth. Besides being the benefactor of Abigail’s financial acumen, John Adams was also the second president of the United States. Women often had to hide their sex and/or their race to make the most of their financial intelligence.

Unfortunately, pushback against successful women continues to be a consistent theme of American culture. Modern women may choose to fight back in the courts or the court of public opinion. Women are still less common than men in the financial market, meaning their success can still feel intimidating or threatening to the status quo.

In a recent Forbes article “Investing Is On The Rise, But Women Are Being Left Behind” they broke it down:

Our most recent study shows men (23%) are investing in the stock market more since Covid-19 compared to only 10% of womenThe Wall Street Journal (paywall) states that women are just more cautious by nature than men and tend to invest more in real estate, bonds, or cash. This reinforces what we find in our own data.

Currently, 13% of Americans own cryptocurrency with 19% of men owning, and only 8% of women, according to our study. Women are less likely to participate in the stock market or purchase cryptocurrency, due to a variety of reasons. It could be that the current marketing outreach isn’t applicable to them, causing a trickle-down effect of less engagement among investors.
