So, you run a successful business and you’re aware that social media is a great way to attract and retain clients and customers. Hey, you may have even read all of the right articles and set up a Facebook or Twitter account. You’re feeling ready to rock this.

Well, not so fast. Just as you think you’re getting the hang of it, poof! Social media changes. New trends. New features. New topics. New apps. Heck, social media can go through more changes than Cher goes through outfits. Hey, maybe that’s what the song ‘If I could turn back time’ was about. Like, maybe she had a MySpace account and then the world moved on to Facebook. Woah…

Also, mind how you step. Social media can be a minefield. One wrong move and kaboom! You’ve offended, bored, or annoyed a follower. So, what’s the solution? Well, if you want to be a social media marketing guru, and have more followers than you can shake a stick at, just follow our top tips and tricks.

Follow the leaders

Ok, it sounds obvious, but if you want to know what’s happening in the social media world, what’s trending, and what’s hot, follow those who are industry leaders and influencers. Like their style? Model it.

You can find these social media experts… well, on social media. Look out for anyone using hashtags such as #social media (duh) #SMM #inboundmarketing – then fall down the social media rabbit hole and learn, folks. But don’t stop there. Subscribe to their YouTube channel, watch their videos, listen to their podcasts, read their tweets, stalk their Facebook account, and click on their interviews. Boom – it’s a masterclass in rockin’ it on social media.

You’re not alone. The world is packed with business owners, just like you, trying to crack this social media game. The world is also packed with people who are happy to share their experience and knowledge and point you in the right direction.

Join a social media manager’s Facebook group. Sign up for webinars on the subject and ask the experts some questions. Join events and conferences for business owners, network, and learn from others.

Often, you can sign up for newsletters (such as Matt Navarra or, Social Media Week in Review) which are great for keeping you in the loop on what’s new in the social media marketing world.

Get your blog on

Guys, there’s a wealth of knowledge on various social media blogs, so set aside some time, go for the Venti Americano, and get ready to take some notes. We love Hubspot, Social Media Today, Buffer, Social Media ProOutbound Engine, and more.

They’re packed full of social media marketing content, how-to guides, and generally helpful info.

Social Media Direct

Sometimes, you have to go straight to the horse’s mouth. Keep on top of new products, business-related news, new feature guides, announcements, and case studies by visiting the social media pages of Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Often they’ll break down how to use a new feature with screenshots and step-by-step guides. Yay!

Too busy being fabulous

This all sounds great, but you’re busy building your empire. Boy, do we get that! You’re busy with payroll, stock taking, ordering, rent, staff rota, customer serving, sales… Oh, and I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the toilet is blocked again and… tag, you’re it. You get all the glamorous jobs, right?

So, do you really have the time (or energy, let’s face it) to be a social media master on top of everything else? Also, this is awkward, but we saw that Tiktok attempt, and well… cringe.

Maybe the universe is telling you that it’s time to leave it to the professionals. At Hashtag Creative we’ve got a dream team who know what they’re doing. We do marketing people love and we blow our clients away with the stats every month.
